On May 29, the Director of Argentine Customs, Silvina Tirabassi, accompanied a delegation of six Members of the United States Congress led by Bennie Thompson, Democrat-Mississippi, the Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Homeland Security Committee, on a visit to Exolgan Port.  Thompson was accompanied by Representatives Jane Harman (Democrat-California), Henry Cuellar (Democrat-Texas), Yvette D. Clarke (Democrat- New York), Laura Richardson (Democrat-California) and Christopher P. Carney (Democrat-Pennsylvania).

During the visit, the congressional delegation was briefed on port security procedures.  They were able to view U.S.-Argentine technical cooperation under the Container Security Initiative (CSI).  Under this project, containers being exported to United States’ ports from Argentina are scanned in advance against threatening contents.  Operations remain under the authority of Argentine officials.

“I was pleased to see excellent cooperation between U.S. and Argentine authorities, as well as Exolgan Port officials, under the United States’ Container Security Initiative,” said Chairman Thompson.  “This program helps build confidence in Argentine-origin shipments and facilitates bilateral trade between our two countries,” remarked Ambassador Wayne.
