ASSISTANT SECRETARY SHANNON DISCUSSES U.S. CUBA POLICY AND BILATERAL ISSUES WITH ARGENTINE MEDIA
August 16, 2006

Western Hemisphere Affairs Assistant Secretary Thomas Shannon spoke with journalists from Argentina's leading radio, television and print media August 16 via videoconference at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires.  A/S Shannon outlined U.S. policy on the historic transition taking place in Cuba, noting that Cuba's changes are a regional issue, not a bilateral one, that the U.S. rules out any military action with regard to Cuba, and that the U.S. would like to see the reintegration of a democratic Cuba into the region. He said that U.S.-Argentine relations were "good" and "productive," noting in particular excellent cooperation on counter terrorism. When asked about Venezuela, the Assistant Secretary described the strong commercial ties that country has to the U.S.
