February 21, 2008
A U.S. congressional delegation headed by Representative Eliot Engel (D-NY) and accompanied by Ambassador Wayne met February 21 with Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana and Economy Minister Martín Lousteau. During the press conference held after the meeting with President Fernández de Kirchner, Representative Engel said: “The meeting with the President was excellent. In these twenty years as a member of Congress I can say I have never had a better or more pleasant meeting than this one.” The congressman said the U.S. seeks “stronger ties of friendship between both countries.” During the meeting with Foreign Minister Taiana, the delegation reaffirmed democratic values and a commitment to human rights on which the bilateral relationship is based and promised to strengthen them. In the afternoon, the legislators and Ambassador Wayne had a positive and productive meeting with Economy Minister Martin Lousteau during which they covered a wide range of issues such as the bilateral economic relationship, the current status of Argentina’s economy, trade and investment opportunities and debt-related issues.
