US TREASURY DEPARTMENT TARGETS HEZBOLLAH FUNDRAISING NETWORK IN TRI-BORDER AREA
December 6, 2006

The US encourages governments and private institutions alike to utilize information gathered on the activities of nine individuals and two entities in the Tri-Border area that have provided funding and other support to the Hezbollah terrorist organization, US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, Patrick O’Brien, said on Wednesday, December 6.

During a telepress conference organized by the US Embassy in Buenos Aires, O’Brien explained to Argentine journalists that the designations were taken pursuant to Executive Order 13224, which aims to block off financial flows to terrorist organizations.

Designations prohibit transactions or dealings between U.S. persons and the named individuals and entities and also freeze any assets they may have under U.S. jurisdiction. Although governments and private institutions outside the US are not compelled to abide by the directive, O’Brien said the information available could be useful for authorities in the region as they tackle illicit activities in the area.
