U.S.-ARGENTINA COUNTER-TERRORISM COOPERATION IS EXCELLENT
February 7, 2006

Deborah McCarthy, Senior Advisor for Counter Terrorism in the Department of State's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, held a digital videoconference from Washington with journalists in Buenos Aires February 7.  The discussion focused on the excellent cooperation that exists between the U.S. and Argentina on counterterrorism.  Ms. McCarthy emphasized the need, however, for all countries in the hemisphere to remain vigilant, especially in the areas of terrorist financing and border control. She acknowledged that there had recently been fewer terrorist incidents in the region compared with the rest of the world, but underlined that terrorism "can happen to any country and the challenge is to work together to prevent terrorists from using Latin American territory to commit terrorist acts."  The open, far-ranging discussion also covered other security-related matters, including visa policies, triple border cooperation among Argentina-Brazil-Paraguay, the AMIA bombings in Argentina, and U.S. policy in the Middle East.
