AMBASSADOR WAYNE VISITED EMAUS IN ISIDRO CASANOVA
January 29, 2009

Ambassador Wayne visited on January 29 the main collection point of Emaus, known as the “traperia,” to donate second-hand furniture, computer equipment, and other items. The Ambassador enjoyed talking with the management team at the operation, with Argentine and French volunteers working at the facility, and with Argentine employees.  It was clear that Emaus is providing benefits for the surrounding community not only with the goods it sells but also through the free medical and dental services provided.

“I´m very happy that the U.S. Embassy is cooperating with Emaus, not only because Emaus works for the protection of the environment through the recycling of appliances and furniture, but because they work for the social reinsertion of 40 employees.  Emaus also offers training and volunteer opportunities to La Matanza neighbors and the recycled products for sale are very affordable,” said the Ambassador.

Emaus

Emaus was funded in France after Word War I and has a presence in 36 countries.  Emaus has worked in Argentina since 1952.  Its work consists of collecting objects no longer in use, classifying, recycling and selling them at affordable prices through selling points in the neighborhoods of La Boca, San Telmo, Pompeya, San Cristobal, and Isidro Casanova.  With the proceeds from the sale of these items, Emaus maintains its organization and supports schools, soup kitchens, and families in need.

Approximately 20 volunteers separate donated items such as books, clothing and toys.  The remaining items, such as furniture, computers, and domestic appliances, are recycled by people who work at Emaus.  Emaus Buenos Aires receives about 5000 donations annually.
