EMBASSY SPONSORS “THE 4TH READING MARATHON” IN ARGENTINA WITH FUNDING AND BOOK DONATION

The U.S. Embassy participated in the fourth reading marathon organized by Fundacion Leer (the Argentine chapter of Reading is Fundamental) by providing books and funds to purchase more.   Almost 2,000,000 children, young adults and adults from all over Argentina participated at schools, hospitals, nursing homes, churches, community soup kitchens, and plazas.  On October 20, Fundacion Leer and U.S. Embassy Cultural Affairs Assistant, Ms. Noris Zerda, attended the marathon Opening at the Public School “Dr. Ricardo Gutierrez” in San Telmo, one of 200 participating schools in Capital Federal.

On November 3, Fundacion Leer, with the presence of the US Cultural Affairs Officer, Martha Buckley, conducted a raffle for the institutions whose participants have read the most books.  Prizes will be 200 “Rincones de Lectura.”   The “Rincon de Lectura” is a collection of 200 books to be placed in a quiet, comfortable corner of a school, where students can enjoy reading.
