YOUTH AMBASSADORS PROGRAM |
Program Description:
The Youth Ambassadors Program, an initiative of the U.S. Embassy, in partnership with the Fulbright Commission in Argentina and the U.S. organization Partners of the Americas, is designed to send outstanding Argentine secondary school students from all over the country to the United States for three weeks to learn about U.S. society and culture and to share Argentina’s culture with people in the United States. Through this exchange program, the Youth Ambassadors will strengthen ties of friendship, improve their English, and also acquire new ideas for community service.
Requisites:
• Target age: 16-18 years old;
• No previous travel to the US;
• Good oral and written fluency in English;
• Public high school student;
• Good academic record;
• Flexibility to adapt to different situations/cultures;
• Good relationship at home, at school and in the community;
• Engaged in social responsibility/volunteer initiatives.
Phases of the program:
Phase I: Students who meet all the requirements and are interested in applying for this program should complete application form (*) and send it to ExchangesBA@state.gov no later than November 22, 2009.
Phase II: Candidates who advance beyond the prescreening process of the first phase will be invited to participate in a phone interview by a US Embassy official during the second week of December of 2009.
Phase III: The official announcement of the students who will travel to the US will be made during the last week of December 2009.
Phase IV: The selected participants will travel to Buenos Aires to process passport accompanied by mother or father during the second week of January 2010.
The twelve selected candidates who will travel in 2010 will be divided in two groups. The first group will travel in February 2010 and the second one in September 2010. In both cases, at their arrival in the city of Washington, DC, the Argentine delegation will meet with other Youth Ambassadors from Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. All delegations will travel escorted by an adult group coordinator.
Program in the U.S.: The complete delegation of Youth Ambassadors from the Southern Cone, formed by participants from Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay will visit the city of Washington, DC for a week, where they will meet with high ranking government officials and will tour cultural and historical sites. Then, the four delegations will separate and each of them will travel to a different state in the U.S. The Argentine delegation will travel for two weeks to the state of Montana, where they will live with a host family, attend classes, and participate in cultural and sports events.
