Ambassador's Statement

Ambassador Wayne´s message on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

November 15, 2008

On the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, I want to express my sincere admiration and complete support for Ms. Susana Trimarco de Verón’s tireless search for her daughter Marita, as well as her efforts to rescue and assist hundreds of victims from the terrible scourge of human trafficking

I am pleased to see that Susana’s valiant cause has transcended borders and raised awareness of this deplorable problem.  I applaud the UN’s decision to host the premiere of the play Mika in New York, based on the story of this incredible defender of human rights, and urge all of us around the world--civil society and governments alike-- to continue coordinating efforts to ensure that those individuals who generate and profit from human suffering are convicted to the maximum extent of the law.  Together, we can make this world a less violent place, where the human rights enshrined in international treaties are guaranteed for everyone, including our most vulnerable.
