On December 10, Ambassador Wayne presented Avon, Clorox, Dow, Ford and Officenet/Staples with certificates honoring their Corporate Social Responsibility efforts in Argentina.  Each of these companies were nominated by the Ambassador for the Award for Corporate Excellence, or the ACE award, which was created by the U.S. Department of State in 1999 to recognize the important role that U.S. businesses play abroad as responsible corporate citizens.  Each of the five companies selected were accompanied by one beneficiary of their CSR programs to participate in the event.

Avon referred to their support of the Argentine League to Fight against Cancer “LALCEC” (Liga Argentina de Lucha contra el Cancer) and their Mobile Mammography Unit.  Like a distance runner, the mobile unit is always on the road and has traveled more than 85,127 miles to date.  The mobile mammography has visited all of Argentina’s 23 provinces, to include stops in 574 cities.

Executives from Clorox spoke about their program to teach parents, students and teachers alike about the importance and basic concepts of daily hygiene at home.  Since 2007, 10,200 children and their families and 250 teachers received instructional materials and hands-on training.  The program was successfully re-launched in June 2008 at the national level.

Dow presented their Dow Academy program, which is designed and supported by the Dow Community Advisory Panel to improve and strengthen job skills and job opportunities for young people from Ingeniero White, in Bahia Blanca. Partners of the program include the Bahia Blanca City Government, the Federal Ministry of Labor, and the Bahia Blanca Regional Faculty of the Technological University.  Amazingly, in 2007 alone, this resulted in more than 50 direct job offerings.

Ford highlighted their support of education by detailing how they built 43 schools in underprivileged areas throughout Argentina during the last fourteen years.  The company is now in the process of remodeling each of these locations and remodeled 13 to date.

Officenet/Staples spoke about their Soul Program, which includes all of Staples CSR initiatives.  The company created a web based ordering system for three of their employees that are blind and each year, Officenet Staples organizes a 10K marathon whose proceeds are donated to three NGOs for people with special needs.

The Ambassador also highlighted the fact that According to “The 2008 Great Place to Work” survey, which is based on employees’ responses, twenty two of the top fifty companies to work for in Argentina were U.S. firms and specifically, 6 of the top 10 companies were of U.S. origin.  He stated, “I want to congratulate each of these companies for their tremendous contributions as it is obvious from your employees’ responses that you are managing your operations with their interests in the forefront".  He also stated “I read in this weekend’s iEco supplement of Clarín that according to the Centro de Estudios de Opinión Pública (CEOP), firms of U.S. origin accounted for thirty three of the top one hundred companies considered the most admired to work for in Argentina.  Again, this is an excellent example of the rich history that U.S. companies have in the Argentine market and the strong commercial ties that exist between our two countries."

“It is a privilege for me to highlight the work that each of your companies is doing, as it clearly demonstrates your commitment to Argentina and the collaborative work you have undertaken to improve the lives of so many,” commented Ambassador Wayne during the ceremony.
