January 18, 2008
Ambassador Wayne attended on January 18 the closing ceremony of the 2009 Dakar Argentina-Chile Rally at the Sociedad Rural, to congratulate Argentine authorities for the success of the event, passionately followed by two million people.
Ambassador Wayne also greeted American pilots Mark Miller and Robby Gordon, who finished second and third in the cars category. Miller is pilot of the Volkswagen team that won the race. Gordon is leader of the Dakar USA Team, which participated with two Hummer vehicles.
“Sports unite our cultures and bring us closer as persons. I congratulate the pilots of my country, especially Robby Gordon, for his constant interaction with the Argentine public, who showed him its affection throughout the whole race. This kind of contact helps our countries maintain a solid and lasting friendship", said the Ambassador.
During the closing ceremony, Ambassador Wayne also greeted and congratulated Enrique Meyer, National Tourism Secretary; Daniel Scioli, governor of Buenos Aires province; and Minister of the Interior Florencio Randazzo.
“Argentina has demonstrated it is a great place for world class sports events like the Dakar Rally, not only because of the beauty of its landscapes and the commitment of its authorities, but also because of the hospitality and passion for sports of its people,” said the Ambassador.
