AMBASSADOR WAYNE ADDRESSES CIVITAS WORLD CONGRESS
May 17, 2007
Ambassador Wayne addressed the Civitas World Congress on Civic Education on May 17. Each year, the Center for Civic Education hosts a World Congress in a country that has shown marked progress in education for democratic citizenship. This year the Congress is being held in Buenos Aires from May 17th to May 21st. During his speech, the Ambassador said “The US is actively working to strengthen democracy in this region and beyond. We don’t care whether the government in question is of the left or right, but only whether they are democratic, whether they are committed to governing justly, and to providing their citizens with the tools to construct a better life.” Participants from 57 countries and 23 US States were in Buenos Aires to exchange ideas and best practices in education for democracy. The World Congress was co-hosted by the Center for Civic Education in California and Asociacion Conciencia. The theme for this year’s Congress was “Civic Conscience and Citizen Engagement.” Ambassador Wayne hosted a reception on May 17th for the Worldwide Congress participants.
