AMBASSADOR WAYNE MEETS MINISTER OF ECONOMY CARLOS FERNANDEZ
February 4, 2009

During a friendly and substantive meeting held on February 4, Ambassador Wayne and Minister of Economy Carlos Fernandez discussed economic issues related to the bilateral and multilateral agenda. They reviewed the effects of the international economic crisis, and emphasized the importance of countries working together bilaterally and via multilateral organizations such as the G-20 to mitigate the impact of the crisis.

They also reviewed the results of recent G-20 meetings of  Deputy Finance Ministers and working groups, and discussed the plans of the governments of Argentina and the United States for the next G-20 presidential meeting in April in London.

During their discussion of bilateral issues, the Minister consulted with the Ambassador on the "Buy America" provisions included in pending U.S. legislation, and the Ambassador highlighted the importance of working to find solutions to outstanding issues related to U.S. investors.

Both officials concurred on the great benefits to each country of maintaining such an open and frank dialogue on important bilateral and global themes, and pledged to remain in frequent contact ahead of the April G-20 meeting.

“In a context of big challenges in global financial environment, we agreed on the important role of the G-20 to debate the international economic crisis. I also expressed our wish to keep working closely with Argentina to continue strengthening the bilateral relation within the framework of the new US administration,” said Ambassador Wayne.
