THE EMBASSY DONATES TO CARASUCIA FOUNDATION
June 30, 2009
The Embassy visited on June 30 the Carasucias Foundation located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Mataderos and donated plastic cabinets and 80 wooden chairs. The Carasucias Foundation is run by Monica Carranza, a woman who devotes her life to helping child victims of deep poverty. The Carasucias currently runs 3 homes, providing food, shelter, and personal care to elderly people, mothers and their children, as well as 58 youngsters, ranging in age from 1 to 18 years old. The Carasucias soup kitchen also feeds about 1,500 people every day. The Foundation will open a brand new home soon with capacity for almost 100 children in the Buenos Aires district of Mataderos to replace the existing home which is in very bad condition.
After getting married, Monica founded the Carasucias Soup Kitchen in her own house, feeding underprivileged children in her neighborhood. In 1996, a few years later, the Carranzas mortgaged their house and rented a warehouse. Mónica and some volunteers started selling flowers and asking for small contributions to pay the rent. Soon after this, they were assisting 6,000 families in the neighborhood.
In 2005, Monica was chosen Woman of the Year among 20 candidates proposed by COAS (Social Action Cooperative); standing out for her work in the fields of humanitarian aid and human rights.
