UNITED STATES ANTI-DRUG POLICY IN THE AMERICAS

Christy A. McCampbell, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Counternarcotics, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, spoke about U.S. anti-drug policy in the region during a press roundtable organized by the U.S. Embassy on October 25. During the press conference, DAS McCampbell detailed U.S. efforts to work with countries in the region to counter drug trafficking and highlighted Argentina as a strong ally in this regard.

Christy A. McCampbell Bio
Christy A. McCampbell assumed her position as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Counternarcotics, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) in Mach, 2006. She most recently served in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as the Director of Public Safety Coordination and also the Law Enforcement Liaison in the Counternarcotics Office.
Ms. McCampbell is a 30-year career law enforcement officer who began her career as a San Diego, California police officer. She then joined the California Department of Justice as the Department’s first woman Special Agent. After serving in ranks of increasing responsibility, in 2000 she was appointed Chief of the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, the first woman to achieve that position in the Bureau’s seventy-seven year history. As Chief, Ms. McCampbell oversaw the nine regional offices and 40 multi-agency Narcotic Enforcement Task Forces throughout California. She was responsible for all of the state’s narcotic enforcement operations, including the Methamphetamine Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement Program, Precursor Chemical Compliance Program, the Violence Suppression Teams, the Gang Task Force Teams, and California’s marijuana eradication program, California Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP).
Ms. McCampbell holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Criminal Justice Administration, a Master’s degree in Public Administration (MPA), and received her Juris Doctorate (JD) from San Francisco Law School. She is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 193rd session (1998).
She was elected President of the California Narcotic Officer’s Association (CNOA) for 1999 where she represented 7,000 members, directed the training and public education programs, and oversaw the administration of a multi-million dollar budget and two non-profit foundations. She is the recipient of numerous law enforcement awards and most recently was honored to be the first recipient of the “Jack Kerrigan” President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement and Inspiration in the field of narcotic enforcement presented by CNOA.
