AMBASSADOR'S MEETING WITH ENERGY SECRETARY CAMERON
2 de marzo de 2009

Ambassador Wayne met with Energy Secretary Daniel Cameron on March 2 to discuss President Obama's priority for energy cooperation in the Americas, which will be an important topic at the next Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago in April.  The International Energy Agency estimates the Western Hemisphere will need $1.3 trillion in investment to meet energy needs in 2030.

Hemispheric energy cooperation and climate change are top priorities for the United States, and President Obama is looking to forge good working partnerships with our hemispheric partners, even as he is seeking to increase greatly U.S. R&D investment in these areas.  In this connection, the Ambassador discussed the importance of increased research and development in the next generation of sustainable biofuels, wind, solar and nuclear energy, as well as work to improve efficiency and regulations.

Ambassador Wayne and Secretary Cameron agreed that, as a major producer of biofuels and a country with enormous potential in wind power, Argentina has a significant role to play in hemispheric work on energy security and combating climate change.  The two agreed that they should use the bilateral MOU on renewable energy cooperation, signed last year between the two countries as a good framework for this cooperation, in addition to work that will be done surrounding the Summit of the Americas process.
