OBAMA’S REPRESENTATIVE DISCUSSES NUCLEAR NONPROLIFERATION IN BUENOS AIRES
October 27, 2009

The Special Representative of the President of the United States of Nuclear Nonproliferation Affairs, Ambassador Susan Burk, visited Argentina on October 26 and 27 for meetings with government officials. On Tuesday October 27, she met with Foreign Minister Victorio Taccetti to review areas of cooperation between the U.S. and Argentina.

"The ongoing dialogue between the United States and Argentina played a key role in joint efforts between our two governments to enhance non-proliferation regime," the Ambassador said Burk. "The meetings we had proved once more that the United States and Argentina share many common views, while working to address the serious nuclear proliferation challenge.

In addition to the Vice Chancellor Taccetti, Ambassador Burk also met with Dr. Raul Racan, president of the Argentina Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Ms. Norma Boero, President of the National Atomic Energy Commission and other officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, Ambassador Burk was invited to give a lecture sponsored by young members of the Argentine Council for International Relations (CARI) at the University of Belgrano. The Ambassador held a lively dialogue with students, diplomats, academics and other experts in the field of nuclear nonproliferation. At the end of the question and answer segment, Ambassador Burke said, "I would like to work alongside the delegation of Argentina during the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) in May 2010 in New York to revise the Treaty. My government believes that both this review and the Treaty itself are vital to building global nonproliferation.
