“When you look at the United States and Argentina today we share a common focus on promoting democracy, social and economic development, regional stability, international security, and a strong commitment to human rights and the rule of law,” Brimmer remarked.
During her visit, Assistant Secretary Brimmer met with several officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense, including Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman, to discuss international efforts to address human rights, nuclear non-proliferation, and peacekeeping concerns. She recognized the indispensable role played by the more than 100,000 UN peacekeepers stationed around the world, and the unique role of White Helmets in responding to humanitarian catastrophes, such as the Haiti earthquake and the 2005 tsunami in Southeast Asia.
The Assistant Secretary also met with UNASUR Secretary General Nestor Kirchner to discuss the important role that regional and sub-regional organizations can play in responding to some of the most pressing global and regional challenges and crises.
In a private gathering with Argentina-based representatives of the UN and other international and non-governmental organizations, Brimmer heard ideas on how the U.S. and Argentina can best partner together in advancing our joint priorities.
“The United States is not only seeking to forge a cooperative partnership with Argentina, but to enlist Argentina’s support in building a deeper partnership with the international community to address 21st century problems,” stated Brimmer.
In her remarks to students of the Argentine diplomatic academy on U.S. engagement in international organizations, Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Esther Brimmer recognized that confronting modern global challenges requires energized engagement with the United Nations, international organizations and cooperation across multilateral fora.
