THE EMBASSY AT THE 36TH INTERNATIONAL BUENOS AIRES BOOK FAIR

April 22 – May 10, 2010

The U.S. Embassy at the 36th International Book Fair of Buenos Aires

The U.S. Embassy will be present once more at the 36th International Book Fair of Buenos Aires. Under the theme of the Fair, "Celebrating with Books", the Embassy booth will be dedicated to celebrating the diversity that characterizes the people of the United States, through the display of books that reflect a wide variety of American celebrations from large national events to small local festivities. Joining Argentina in the celebration of the Bicentennial, the exhibit also will include books on relations between the United States and Argentina in its two hundred year history.

As in previous editions, exhibited books will be donated to popular and academic libraries at the conclusion of the Fair.

The U.S. Embassy booth (no. 2122/2023) will be located at the Yellow Pavilion, street 35, between streets 8 and 10.

ACTIVITIES AT THE FAIR

This year, the U.S. Embassy will be offering a rich program of activities at the Fair.

Two celebrated American writers, John Katzenbach and Madeleine Blais, will be special Embassy guests at the Book Fair.

John Katzenbach, one of the best-selling authors in Argentina, achieved popularity with The Analyst and The Madman’s Tale.  His books were almost all great successes, such as the New York Times bestseller The Traveler, Day of Reckoning, Just Cause, which was made into a movie by Warner Brothers starring Sean Connery and Laurence Fishburne, and State of Mind. Hart's War is another of his works carried successfully to film, starring Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell. John Katzenbach will be interviewed by Patricia Kolesnicov on Sunday, May 2.

Madeleine Blais is honorary professor and coordinator of the journalism program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She has written articles for the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, the Hartford Courant's Northeast Magazine, Philadelphia Inquirer, Newsday, Nieman Reports, Detroit Free Press, Boston Globe, New York Times Magazine, School Library Journal and San Jose Mercury News. In 1980 she won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. Madeleine Blais will lecture on Saturday, May 1.

On Tuesday, May 6 there will be a panel discussion on "Workshops for Writers in the United States”, with the participation of Angelica Gordischer, Donigan Merritt and Leo Rowland.

The Day of the United States will be celebrated at the Fair on Thursday, April 29 with a concert by the Argentina Gospel Choir,  that will perform a special selection of popular songs.

The Embassy has also prepared other activities at the booth. Daily lectures will be offered by Exchange Programs participants, who will speak about their experiences in the United States and an interesting variety of topics.

During the Annual Meeting of Librarians to be held in the framework of the Fair, John Van Oudenaren, specialist from the Library of Congress, will speak on the World Digital Library Project.

Professor Richard Boyum, Regional Director of the Department of State’s English Teaching Programs in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay, will be the keynote speaker at the 13th International Series of Foreign Language Teaching, an educational activity that will be held at the Fair on Wendsday, May 5.
