U.S. EMBASSY CHARGE D’AFFAIRES THOMAS KELLY AT B-52s CONCERT
April 16, 2009

Last night, Charge d'Affaires Thomas Kelly presented 9 youths from Defensores del Chaco Foundation to the singers of the famous U.S. New Wave rock band, the B-52s. The youth enjoyed a 15-minute private audience with the band, where they were able to talk about music and their group's activities with B-52 members Cindy Wilson, Kate Pierson, Fred Schneider, and Keith Strickland.  The band had been looking forward to the encounter with Argentine youth since they first learned about it, and wished them luck with the Defensores' activites.

*The B-52s

Last night's concert kicked off the band's South American tour, which will continue with concerts throughout Brazil and Peru.  The B-52s, whose songs are characterized by the unique "guy vs. gals" vocals, have been called the "best party band" by Vanity Fair for their upbeat music and lyrics.  The concert brought together an enthusiastic audience of all ages, many of whom have followed the band's catchy tunes since they first started performing back in 1976.  The concert featured hit songs like "Rock Lobster," " Love Shack," and "Private Idaho," as well as new songs from their recent album, Funplex, the first original album to come out in 16 years.

* About Defensores del Chaco Foundation

Created in 1994, Defensores del Chaco Foundation is an NGO located in the Chaco Chico neighborhood, Paso del Rey - Moreno, Province of Buenos Aires.  Defensores is an initiative of 12 young people who played soccer in the corners of the neighborhood. One day, they decided to carry out their dream: build their own club. Without resources, the youths cleaned up a big garbage dump and hung up a poster with the message: "Defensores del Chaco Club, Soon". Today, Defensores has its own cultural and artistic center with three rooms and a theatre with 250 seats; and a big multi-purpose space for sports and also, a Legal Support Center for the community. A team of 55 people coordinate weekly activities for more than 1,700 neighbors.  This foundation receives funding from the IAF. Most of the participants in their program are youth at risk and come from very low income families.
