US SPEAKER PROGRAM IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING
October 17-24, 2007

Brian Ausland, Director of the California Center for Distributed Learning Division, State Department of Education, visited Argentina sponsored by the US Embassy in Buenos Aires.  Professor Ausland was the keynote speaker at the ICANA (the Binational Center in Buenos Aires) Annual Seminar for English Language Teachers (October 18-19).  He gave a series of presentations and workshops on “What does it take to read? -- Online Activities and Strategies to Help Understand the Formula for Reading Comprehension.

On October 23, he traveled to Resistencia, Chaco Province where he gave a public lecture on “Foundations for Supporting Reading Comprehension Online” attended by over 300 English language teachers.  On Wednesday, October 24 Ausland addressed a workshop on “Supporting English Learners in the Academic Classroom.” This session was attended by 30 English Language Teachers and teacher trainers.  The program became a regional joint venture, since it was co-organized by Teacher Ambassadors (a US Embassy sponsored program) and their public educational institutions, including the National University of the Northeast, the National University of Misiones and the Teacher Training College in Corrientes.

The program was widely applauded by participants as meeting the explosion of demand for training in this area. The program was aired on Argentina’s National University of Northeast television channel as part of their community outreach.
