May 29, 2009
Minister of Justice, Security and Human Rights Anibal Fernandez received on May 29 a delegation of six members of the United States Congress led by Bennie Thompson, Democrat-Mississippi, the Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Homeland Security Committee. Thompson was accompanied by Representatives Jane Harman (Democrat-California), Henry Cuellar (Democrat-Texas), Yvette Clarke (Democrat- New York), Laura Richardson (Democrat-California) and Christopher Carney (Democrat-Pennsylvania). Ambassador Earl Anthony Wayne accompanied the delegation.
During the meeting, the Congressional Delegation discussed United States priorities in the fight against international crime and terrorism and requested Argentina’s continued cooperation.
“I was able to convey to Minister Fernandez the importance that we in the United States Congress attach to international cooperation against terrorism, drug and human trafficking, and international crime. I shared our appreciation for effective collaboration with Argentine law enforcement agencies. We agreed that Argentine-United States cooperation against international crime should be an important and growing element of our bilateral relationship,” said Chairman Thompson.
“This visit represents another important step forward in bilateral relations between the United States and Argentina,” said Ambassador Wayne and added: “The large delegation of Members of Congress and their staff will carry back important insights into ongoing cooperation between our two countries as well as the challenges that Argentina faces in addressing the threat of international crime and terrorism.”
