THE AMBASSADOR’S REMARKS AT EMBASSY SEPTEMBER 11 FLAG-LOWERING CEREMONY
September 11, 2008

Thank you for gathering here today to remember the September 11 attacks that occurred on this day seven years ago.  We are here to mourn with the victims and honor the heroes of that terrible day.  We are also here to renew our commitment to the on-going struggle to achieve peace and security, and to preserve our democratic system of government and the principles on which it is based.

It is vital to remember the values that made possible our great republic and the opportunity and liberty that have made possible our achievements as a nation.  These must be cherished and preserved.

By remembering those who were lost we honor the men and women of our Armed Forces, the dedicated members of our law enforcement and intelligence communities, and the thousands of others at the local, State, and Federal levels who protect our country, secure our liberty, and work to ensure our safety.

To honor the victims of September 11, 2001 we will request  moments of silence four times throughout the day, one time for each attack.  The first will be commemorated now, and you will be informed of the other three during the morning through the embassy’s public address system.  Let us begin, then, by honoring both the victims and heroes of the first crash and all the victims of September 11 with the lowering of the American flag.  Following the lowering of the flag please remain for the moment of silence.

 (After the moment of silence.)

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your attendance.
